What does steam punk Fashion Consist of?

Steampunk ClothingSteampunk wear is a term derived from the era when steampower was widely used, i.e. in the Victorian period in Britain or the Wild West in the United States. It is an ideology that is part science fiction, part fantasy which incorporates speculative fiction as well. However, it is based more on the Victorian perspective of fashion, architecture, art and culture. The fantasy factor sets in because some of the machines envisioned include ‘lighter than air- air ships and mechanical computers.

Steampunk attire came into trend in the 1980’s and the early 90’s. It adopts a fascinating style combining goth, industrial fetish and a remix of the Victorian era. The weaves comprise of cultural thread from various parts of the world and the designs are mainly drawn from a 19th century base. The amazing thing about this fashion line is that it is usually designed by the wearer himself adding numerous accessories to complete the outfit.

Steampunk clothes look pretty strange with even cogs and gears incorporated into them. This fashion line is most popular among the cosplayers. They strut about in steampunk costumes dressed up as pirates, explorers or Victorian socialites. Some of the accessories include goggles, mock ray guns, festooned coats and top hats. The ray guns are specially built using whatever knick knacks they can find including wood and metal. Some of them have Nerf or Airsoft guns painted on them.

Steampunk fashion aptly described as a sub culture, at first was popular only in Britain and the United states but now the trend has spread to Japan as well. Some of the items of clothing usually used in this fashion include:

• Vests

• Corsets

• Bustles

• Jackets

• Skirts and blouses

Some of the clothes are style in the lines of Military wear, of course after making necessary changes to incorporate the ‘punk chic’.

Steampunk clothes are not entirely reflective of the bygone days, for modern accessories are also included in it. For example mobile phones and music players are also carried around after modifying them to fall part of the design.

Since the basic idea is woven around the Steampower era, the colors of the clothes are usually on the darker side, mostly in grey, brown and black. The idea behind it is to keep the soot and coal marks hidden. The fabric used is usually leather probably to make it last longer. Goggles are seen with most steampunk attire again to keep the soot out of their eyes.Vistorian Clothing

Steampunk Clothing need not be viewed as casual or funny in fact whoever wears them have a distinct since of sophistication setting in, making them more respectable then before. Those who wish to view steampunk clothes on the big screen can watch movies like the Time Machine and Sleepy Hollow that are entirely filmed on the basis of this subculture.

Staunch followers of this fashion line mimic characters from the Victorian era while others create their own individual costumes. Captain of the skies is a favorite among some instilling a mood of rebelliousness as well as mystery. If you are short of ideas on creating a costume, you could logon to the internet which portrays a myriad of ideas on the subject.

So why not create a different look at your next costume party by sporting , Victorian clothing, corset and goggles and a tophat!

Growing Popularity of Steampunk Fashion

Steampunk ClothesThe term steampunk clothes remind us of the fashion that has been weaved by mixing Victorian trends with new technology which came into existence since 1980s. In short the term “steam” is used in clothing to emphasis the idea of Victorian materials and machines and “punk” reminds us of unique creativity and style of the age. Thus Steampunk or Victorian science fiction rooted in steam powered machines and robots culture of the great Victorian era has highly influenced the fashion trends since 1980s.
As we all know that Victorian age reminds us of adventure, culture, and explorer. It was the time when both men and women behaved as they were. This was the time when women were free to work and wear as per their choice. They wore pants as they went out to work in the industries. Easy and comfortable clothing became the trend of the time. Today while steampunks blended such Victorian era aesthetics with modern technology, it not only offers style, elegance but also offers, comfort, class, opulence and creativity at its best.
As said since 1980s and 1990s people have started experimenting with the fashion and richness of the Victorian era. The steampunk clothing reflects such experimentation in detail. To dress like a stempunk, your clothes must contain the Victorian flare with a modern touch. Women attires included elements like Victorian corsets and petticoats while the men’s fashion incorporates the Victorian military flare. The clothes also offers a bit more rugged feel, which is highly influenced by steam and coal. The clothes are generally dark in color the idea is that, that dark hue will easily hide the dirty coal shoot. Other accessories like goggles and leather are heavily used, goggles to protect the eyes from smoke and leather as a lasting fabric.
Follow these below mentioned guidelines if you wish to dress in steampunk style;
• You may decide on blending anything you like, but it must have the elegant touch of the Victorian era.
• Lean on the Victorian costumes for ideas. Remember that it is all about aesthetics and how you can blend and recreate an illusive world of the late 19th century.Steampunk Corsets
• Avoid branded clothes or labels that are prominently visible.
• Try and incorporate the characters like, an adventurer, or an explorer, an engineer or an aviator.
• Use colors like brown or more popularly “Sepia”.
• Fabric prints and steampunk patterns can be used in women garments to decorate the dress.
• All kind of gadgets can be used perfectly to accessorize the dress and enhance the look.
• Exploring instruments, like, telescopes, binoculars or compasses are the best props that can be taken from that era.
• Do not forget to wear a hat the iconic headgear of the age was the top hat.
• Both men and women may also use shawls, gloves or scarves and handkerchief.
Thus it can be inferred that steampunk explores a philosophical thought by blending ideals of creativity with a dash of self- reliance and the optimistic thought of the Victorian age which projected the hopes for future and explore the unknown.

Steampunk Costumes for Women of 21st Century

Steampunk DressesSteampunk dress has changed over the years. Now they are not on the same flamboyant pattern as they were during 80’s or 90’s. Inspired and fictional version of Victorian clothing, steampunk dresses created a great degree of impact during those decades. Punk clothes of those times were bizarre and mostly worn by rockers. For a few of them steampunk clothing was a means of showing their individuality and their unique sense of fashion but for some other rockers these clothing was a sign of showing rebellious nature toward governmental, political and social establishment. Still the scenario is same but exaggeration in costumes has reduced.
Now steampunk clothing has acquired some other different names for instance emo clothing, alternate clothing and Goth clothing. Yes, the Goth clothing because Jess Nevins said “Steampunk is what happens when Goths discover brown”. Steampunk corsets, trousers, jackets, blouse and tops are most popular punk costumes among today’s contemporary women. Each and every category of clothing have wide array of collection. Only in skirts you will find many styles like short skirts, long skirt, layered skirts, butterfly skirt and many more to this list. Out of these skirts mermaidsss skirt is more famous among women. It is long and tight at top and voluminous (spread out) at bottom.
Just like jackets, shrugs are also a Victorian style outer most wear. Steampunk Jackets and shrugs are made of all different types of fabrics and designs. They are made from leather basically faux leather, faux fur, velvet and satin. Accessories like Buckles, drawstrings and linings are not only to provide support and comfort to wearer but also add finishing touch to outer most apparel. These beautifully accented jackets and shrugs create envelope of warmth and add confidence to their boho steampunk chic look. If you are about to attend evening party, these can prove as perfect combination for your corset or steampunk blouse.
What I suppose out of many steampunk Victorian costumes, corsets has left them behind in terms of popularity. The main aim of corset is to support the bust and reduce waistline upto a few inches and this is the point where it gets clicked with most women. The different styles and designs of punk Victorian corsets are made from fabrics like suede, rayon, cotton, velvet, satin and faux leather. As in case of jackets here also twill lining, drawstrings and eyelets do the same job. Look gorgeous in these opulent corsets and grace you night outings. Who knows, maybe you will become a show stopper of evening parties.Steampunk Skirts
While you can purchase punk themed costumes separately, getting them in ensemble is not difficult too. Many online sellers sell punk dresses in sets and this is the convenient way of buying. By purchasing costumes in set you will not only save money but time too which you would have spent for searching each dress.
Women wear steampunk clothing but not only for attention as most people think. They wear them to look fashionable and stylish, to show the world their own individuality. Wearing these dresses with correct matching is not necessary as they are filled with variant array of clothing. So mismatched stuff will also work and that is the peculiarity of steampunk costumes.

Steampunk Lifestyle Its Origin and Clothing

Steampunk WearSteampunk, a newly originated sub- culture is the neo version of Victorian era. This sub culture is the combination of history, fantasy and science fiction and has its root in Victorian era but saw emergence during late 1960’s. Came in formation in the mid of twentieth century, this punk culture was in its peak during 1980 and 1990’s and since then its popularity is only rising. Victorian style of clothing in modified version is the main aspect of this genre and most important part of style making for them. Even you have experienced situation where people get dressed up in Victorian clothing and in other furious accessories.

Majority of people who follow this genre are based in Britain and USA but this sub culture is famous international canvas. After Britain and USA Japan has the largest population of this group. There is no set of guidelines for steampunk fashion. Steampunk clothing is accented with technological knowhow and period accessories. Vests, corsets, skirts, blouses, tops, gowns, petticoats, bustles, jackets and other garments like military wear are some of the inspired garments from Victorian period that have undergone changes to suit the punk chic of this sub culture.

The phrase “Steampunk is what happens when Goths discover brown” by Jess Nevins go well with the mood of punk sub-culture. Punks are more inclined towards romance, adult fiction and rude behavior. Same thing that can be easily depicted through steampunk clothes also. Although their clothes are not exactly Victorian in approach but are technically modified Victorian costumes and seen as a proof of more adventurous life. Even modern accessories like mobiles and music players are modified to give them Victorian look.

Steampunk clothes are lighter and easier to move around and have rugged approach. This is because technology of this genre is powered by coal and steam. That is why the shades of most of the clothes are darker in color, may be to hide coal soot. Goggles and leather are significant part of steampunk attire. Goggles to keep soot out of eyes and leather so that fabric long last.Steampunk Dress

If you are thinking of wearing steampunk wear then movies based on punk culture could prove to be good guide for you. Sleepy Hollow, The League of Extra Ordinary Gentlemen, The Time machine are a few name out of many Hollywood movies based on punk sub-culture. In such movies from clothing to setup to storyline are all on the line of Victorian style with a twist of fantasy. Steampunk in itself is complete culture and lifestyle at the same time.

Moreover people think that steampunk attire is unsophisticated and casual but in reality most of the time situation is exactly opposite. Punk fashions induce something in followers which make them highly respectable. Steampunk clothing gives us healthy fusion of bespoke clothing and accessories of industrial age of certain standard that many people could not be able to match.

Steampunk sub-culture is the intersection of creativity, independency and Victorian optimistic view of future. For me it is somewhat an interaction of fiction, romance and science which also reflects in steampunk clothes and victorian clothing.

History of Steampunk Clothing

Steampunk BlousesPunk fashion is much more than modified Victorian clothing, industrial goggle and brass watches. Many people ignore the impact of steampunk clothing but the fact is this style of clothing has hugely affected the whole genre of people belonging to a sub-culture called steampunk. Steampunk dresses are the reflection of individuality and style of people belonging to this subgroup. Their ideas of punk costume include brash colors and venturesome designs. Modern day punk costumes are improvised version of 1980’s punk costumes. Inspite of all accusations and allegations these costumes are the best way of carrying forward the legacy of Victorian era while remaining ultra modern.
All punk clothes are not the sign of rebellious nature that other presume. The punk lifestyle is so much based on design concepts that not only their steampunk clothes even their hairstyle are different form regular styles. Also designing patterns are not limited to their clothes and hair; in their bodies too you will find tattoos of all shapes and sizes in many designs. May be people think that technically modified Victorian style dresses are unsophisticated and casual but in reality numerous people adopted punk style of clothing to show their individuality as regular clothing only aims to provide the same but couldn’t achieve it.
Since origin steampunk clothing is rolling between punks and rock bands. Several rockers have followed this style of clothing. Ramones, Green Day and Blink – 182 are a few name among many existing punk rock bands who took punk clothing. Ramones were the creator of punk rock band while Blink -182 further carried the legacy of Ramones. Punk music of Green Day was on exposing side of government, politics, and religion. It means they had something rebellious inside them against the prevailing rules of society that is why they jumped upon steampunk clothing and punk style rock music to show their agony.
Punk sub-culture are adopted by those people who want to leave the way they want and take dig at existing rules that drive the world. It’s somewhat right that punk sub-culture is not in its peak as it was in 1980 but there is very strong alternative following in fashion and lifestyle. Many international fashion designers have made punk style clothing like steampunk corsets and steampunk gowns as the theme of their dress in fashion shows. There are other people also who don’t share the punk ideology but wear punk dresses because they like it.Steampunk Dresses
Steampunk is the genre of fantasy, fiction and Victorian era history, a philosophy in itself that drift people away from the invisible boundaries which have been put up around. It doesn’t involve in anarchism and nihilism that prevailed during Goth movement rather it induces positivity among people.
Now today you will find mixture of sub-cultures. Somewhere punk sub culture has been tangled or mixed with other subcultures giving us a complete new version of clothing for instance Goth clothing, psychobilly clothing, skate clothing and newly revived steampunk clothing which has the flavor of 1970’s and 1980’s with the essence of steampunk dressing, Victorian clothing and steampunk clothing.
