An Elegance and Perfection of Victorian Fashion

Victorian era covered the long reign of Queen Victoria from June 1837 to January 1901. Quite obviously, the fashions and lifestyles changed several times in this long period. Changing technology and Britain’s control of the colonies across the world made it possible for many different kinds of cultural trends to be accommodated into the British lifestyle. In the beginning of this period, home stitching and clothes made according to individual specifications were in vogue. As the factory-made clothes became the norm, clothes began to be mass-produced and fashion began to be marketed on a large scale by the garment industry.

Sewing machines and stitching technology in the factories improved and lock-stitching was invented, this made trimming much easier than to be made by hand and thus, it became a fashion. Similarly, lace-making on a mass-scale and at low cost became possible with the lace-making machines. Bright synthetic pigments brought a new range of shades which were not part of the repertoire of the organic and natural dyes produced traditionally. Thus, many features of the Victorian clothing were directly related to the technological and industrial evolution of England in the 19th century and its relations with the colonies.

The Victorian clothing for women changed through this period, transiting from flowing bell-shaped gowns to the gowns that were flatter in front and bulged at the back, to less extravagant styles with longer corsets and sleeves that changed from pagoda-style to bell shaped ones. Dresses became more loose-fitting than before.

Ideas from all of these styles have been used by the garment industry of our own contemporary times for catering to the taste of the people who follow the steampunk sub-culture. This trend uses ideas from the Victoria era to produce its own steampunk clothes. These steampunk costumes use the Victoria designs and combine them with modern styles and also with punk style clothes.

Victorian elegance is broken into chaotic fusion styles, in order to create the image of a person breaking boundaries of the society. Colours used are dark, white, grey or brown with occasional patches of bright colours, in conformity with the punk styles, while flowing long gowns, puffed sleeves, laces, trimmings, chemises from the Victorian clothing are popularly used in steampunk clothing to create an effect that is exactly opposite of the Victoria dress.

Similar styles in fashion thus, can be manipulated by the industry to transmit ideas that are entirely opposite to each other. It depends upon how different lines and forms from different genres are mixed and matched to produce these divergent ideas about the individuals wearing these dresses.

Victorian Era and its Charm

The main idea of steampunk clothing is to represent the futuristic view of Victorian era yet maintaining the underdeveloped sense of styling. A true steampunk can relates to the work of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. They were the famous novel writers of punk theme. For many punk style is extremely outrageous and objectionable but who cares, everyone has this and that opinion nevertheless my heart tingles for steampunk costumes.

For me being into punk attire is all about nourishing of ideas that Victorian people laid long ago. Victorian era was a period of tranquil, prosperity and self confidence among people for nation. Great scientific discoveries and inventions are synonyms to that period and apart from punk styled Victorian clothing achievement in the field of science act as base for punk lifestyle. Punk culture is always associated with rebellious behavior of people, I suppose they have misunderstood the whole concept of this newly established sub-genre because the era from which punk movement is inspired only praised for peace and progress. This sub-genre support the agitation against the social disparity in society, punks do not go louder without any means. Despite the repression steampunk sub-culture has grown into phenomenon bringing people together from diverse part of the world under one theme.

Every punk person has set of their favorite steampunk dresses and I am one of them. Actually I have three set of punk Victorian costumes.

Steampunk Harness Dress - This ensemble consist of leather harness, the duggin frilly skirt and McGreedy blouse. Faux leather harness has drawstrings in front and cross designs in back for support. Blouse is made of viscose rayon fabric and had elasticized neck with front opening ties. Elastic neck of blouse allows it to be a dropping shoulder blouse as well. Skirt is made of satin fabric with five layers of frills, giving it voluminous look. Do you know why I chose this dress, because it makes me look graceful and gorgeous?

Captain of the Skies – The dress which exactly tells my attitude. I love this dress, not too reveling yet uber stylish. It is a set of two pieces - captain of the skies over bust corset and a short skirt. My steampunk corset is made of suede fabric and has zipper and drawstring in front. Faux leather straps and black lining are for comfort fit. Short skirt of black linen fabric with metal embellishment on it goes very well with corset.

The Wickfield Dress – Again the set has three pieces the Wickfield blouse, Marquess underbust corset and satin pegged skirt. Alluring poly satin blouse is adorned by net fabric in cuffs. Cotton velvet underbust corset has black twill lining for comfort fit. Skirt has double layers and made of poly satin fabric in combination with small frills and pegged patterns. It has small hanging part at the back which adds elegance to attire. This dress can be worn with or without corset and has very appealing and fascinating approach.

Unlike other conventional clothing, these above stated steampunk costumes literally project my true style. Don’t hid your love for punk subculture go and grab the ensemble of punk Victorian dresses.

What does steam punk Fashion Consist of?

Steampunk ClothingSteampunk wear is a term derived from the era when steampower was widely used, i.e. in the Victorian period in Britain or the Wild West in the United States. It is an ideology that is part science fiction, part fantasy which incorporates speculative fiction as well. However, it is based more on the Victorian perspective of fashion, architecture, art and culture. The fantasy factor sets in because some of the machines envisioned include ‘lighter than air- air ships and mechanical computers.

Steampunk attire came into trend in the 1980’s and the early 90’s. It adopts a fascinating style combining goth, industrial fetish and a remix of the Victorian era. The weaves comprise of cultural thread from various parts of the world and the designs are mainly drawn from a 19th century base. The amazing thing about this fashion line is that it is usually designed by the wearer himself adding numerous accessories to complete the outfit.

Steampunk clothes look pretty strange with even cogs and gears incorporated into them. This fashion line is most popular among the cosplayers. They strut about in steampunk costumes dressed up as pirates, explorers or Victorian socialites. Some of the accessories include goggles, mock ray guns, festooned coats and top hats. The ray guns are specially built using whatever knick knacks they can find including wood and metal. Some of them have Nerf or Airsoft guns painted on them.

Steampunk fashion aptly described as a sub culture, at first was popular only in Britain and the United states but now the trend has spread to Japan as well. Some of the items of clothing usually used in this fashion include:

• Vests

• Corsets

• Bustles

• Jackets

• Skirts and blouses

Some of the clothes are style in the lines of Military wear, of course after making necessary changes to incorporate the ‘punk chic’.

Steampunk clothes are not entirely reflective of the bygone days, for modern accessories are also included in it. For example mobile phones and music players are also carried around after modifying them to fall part of the design.

Since the basic idea is woven around the Steampower era, the colors of the clothes are usually on the darker side, mostly in grey, brown and black. The idea behind it is to keep the soot and coal marks hidden. The fabric used is usually leather probably to make it last longer. Goggles are seen with most steampunk attire again to keep the soot out of their eyes.Vistorian Clothing

Steampunk Clothing need not be viewed as casual or funny in fact whoever wears them have a distinct since of sophistication setting in, making them more respectable then before. Those who wish to view steampunk clothes on the big screen can watch movies like the Time Machine and Sleepy Hollow that are entirely filmed on the basis of this subculture.

Captain of the skies is a favorite among some instilling a mood of rebelliousness as well as mystery. If you are short of ideas on creating a costume, you could logon to the internet which portrays a myriad of ideas on the subject.

Steampunk DressesSteampunk is a fusion of science, history and fantasy, a subgenre inspire from Victorian era of Britain and Wild West of USA, somewhat a mixture of fantasy, science fiction and advance technological aspect of 19th century. For me steampunk is Victorian era lifestyle with romantic gothic touch and 19th century technological fantasy. K. W. coined the term steampunk in his novel infernal devices. Steampunk is combination of two words steam and punk. Steam, a power engine defines technological and mechanical power while punk is to indicate rebellious nature of people, to show rage or rebel in them. Rebellious way of living of the subgenre can be identified through clothing and accessories they use.
In starting people took steampunk as interpretation of Victorian science fiction and romance. A way of showing love for classic past and fictional science but gradually this term became hobby and part of lifestyle for the people. People started consuming everything that has some Victorian element for instance fashion, music, socializing gadgets and etiquette. But the steampunk movement was stated by people who had common interest in science fiction. Novels of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne are synonyms of this movement. War of the worlds, Time machine, the league of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Frankenstein are some of the bestselling novels base on punk genre. We are leaving in industrially revolutionized world and steampunk shows optimistic views for the same like “science will save us”.
Literature was only available tool to bind people of common interest in punk sub- genre initially but on later periods with introduction of internet, steampunk change into a lifestyle. Almost all Victorian costumes and accessories with innovative modification are available on internet for selling. The preferred look is Victorian with a touch of brown of gothic era. Most of steampunk costumes are designed in deep dark, jet color or brown color. It means color of clothing is inclined towards sandy trans, neutral and leather browns.Steampunk Clothing
There is no need follow trend of wearing a particular set of outfit for making a complete punk Victorian costume because steampunk in itself is encouraging, accepts mixing and matching. It means you can combine the totally different steampunk dresses to make whole attire. Another thing you can do is to use your own creativity. Steampunk is not only related to steampunk clothing and steampunk dresses and some fictional technology of history, it has philosophical angle as well which is the combination of Victorian futuristic view, spunk, aptitude and makers creative ideas.
